Mobile, Ala. – The Midway University baseball team returned to the diamond on Saturday afternoon when they wrapped up a four game set with the University of Mobile down in Mobile, Alabama.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, they came up short today as the Rams (4-0) swept the doubleheader winning 7-2 and 12-6. The Eagles (0-4) didn't help their cause as they committed eight errors over the two games.
Game 1: Mobile 7, Midway 2
The Rams scored two runs in the second and one in the third taking a 3-0 lead, but the Eagles battled back and cut the deficit to one run after scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Mobile, however, responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
After being held scoreless for the first three innings, the Eagles got on the board with one run on two hits in the fourth. Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) led the inning off with a single and two batters later Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) helped out his own cause with an RBI single.
Quinones not only played a part in the offense, but he also got the start on the bump. Quinones was stuck with the loss after he tossed 5.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits. Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) got the final two outs in the sixth inning and allowed one run.
The Eagles' offense got back at it in the top of the sixth inning scoring one run on one hit. The Eagles began the inning with a hit by pitch, a single and an intentional walk to load the bases with no one out. Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.) hit a sac fly to score one run, but that would be all the Eagles would get as they trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Rams' bats got going in the bottom of the sixth as they scored four runs on two hits, while capitalizing on a key Midway error in the inning to come away with the 7-2 win.
Game 2: Mobile 12, Midway 6
In the second game, the Eagles had their best offensive output of the young season scoring six runs on six hits, but they didn't help their cause defensively as they committed five errors leading to a 12-6 loss.
The Rams got up early scoring four runs in the first inning and adding two more in the third, but the Eagles got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth. Quinones led the inning off with a walk and Maguire doubled putting runners at second and third. The next batter, Francisco Quinonez (Tampa, Fla.) hit a sac fly scoring Quinones from third.
The Rams added four runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles answered with four of their own in the sixth. The final run in the inning came off the bat of Will Broady (Greenville, Ky.) who singled scoring Reid Battles (Denton, Texas).
Even though the Rams added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles wouldn't quit. Hector Quinones stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh and ripped a 3-2 pitch and set it over the left field fence for a solo home run. That would be all the Eagles would get as Mobile walked away with the 12-6 win.
