Equestrian Western - Tue, Feb. 14, 2017

Morehead, Ky. – The Midway University equestrian western team finished up their regular season on Saturday and Sunday last weekend when they competed in the Morehead State University Show.

Like the hunt seat team, it was the final chance that individual riders would have the opportunity to qualify for regionals that take place on Saturday, February 25th at Morehead State. Riders mush then place first or second to move on to the Western Semifinals hosted by St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina on March 25.

Midway had four riders that qualified for regionals this past weekend including: Madison Chambers (Pennsville, N.J.), Taylor Stephenson (Erlanger, Ky.), Precious Holloway (Dadeville, Ala.) and Charleen Holly (London, Ky.).

With the four that qualified this past weekend, that means a total of nine riders qualified for regionals this season. Four riders qualified in both beginner horsemanship and intermediate horsemanship, while another qualified in novice horsemanship.

Qualifying in beginner was Sahvanna Chaffins (Gallipolis, Ohio), Rashea Smith (Corbin, Ky.), Precious Holloway and Charleen Holly. In intermediate is Hemi Fordham (Jefferson City, Tenn.), Beverly Gartland (Essex, Vt.), Madison Chambers and Taylor Stephenson. Junior, Michelle Clark (Sidney, Ohio) was the lone rider who qualified in novice horsemanship.

At Morehead State, the Eagles got the show started off on a high note by taking home reserve champion in the show on Saturday. Three riders took home first place beginning with Beverly Gartland who won novice horsemanship, while Rashea Smith and Charleen Holly took the top spot in intermediate I horsemanship and beginner horsemanship, respectively.

Then in Sunday's show, Midway placed third overall with one rider garnering first place honors. Freshman, Rashea Smith repeated and took first in intermediate I horsemanship for the second show in a row.

"We put up a good fight finishing in third for the season missing out on reserve champion by only a few points," said head coach, Robin Gollehon. "After winning her class on Saturday, point rider Beverly Gartland had to sit out on Sunday to avoid pointing up for the second time in one season. She was certainly missed making the difference between the team winning Reserve and third for both the day and the season."
