Campbellsville, Ky. – After not playing since Saturday, February 4, the Midway University baseball team returned to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when they traveled to take on nationally ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) in a single nine inning affair.
After the Eagles (0-5) had taken a 1-0 edge after the top of the third inning, the Tigers (3-1) scored four runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to come away with the 8-1 victory.
With four games coming up later this weekend, Midway skipper, Luther Bramblett, decided to 'Johnny Wholestaff' the game against the Tigers as the Eagles threw nine different arms at No. 14 Campbellsville.
Chase Heslep (Bellingham, Wash.) tossed the first inning and got a quick 1-2-3 inning punching out one. Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, Ky.) entered the second inning and allowed two hits, but got a 5-4-3 double play to get out of trouble.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Eagles' offense got things going in the top of the third. Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) got things started with a single and moved to third on a Barrett Croslin (Russellville, Ky.) single setting up Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.) who reached on a fielder's choice scoring Battles from third.
After taking the 1-0 lead, things would go south for the Eagles in the bottom half of the third. DJ Lewis (San Diego, Calif.) started the inning and only recorded one out allowing four runs (two earned) on one hit.
Senior, Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, Ky.) got the final two outs in the third and pitched the fourth. Jones tossed 1.2 innings allowing one run on four hits. Anibal Salado (Santo Domingo, D.R.) started the fifth and allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit in 0.2 innings of work.
From that point on, the quartet of Neal Kirkpatrick (Central City, Ky.), Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.), Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and Jake McCoy (Mesa, Ariz.) shut down the Tigers' offense.
Kirkpatrick entered the game with two outs in the fifth and got the final out in the inning, while Olson, Cespedes and McCoy each appeared in one inning allowing two hits combined with four strikeouts.
It also was a slow day for the Eagles' offense as they finished with just five hits. Scott Heideman (Elizabethtown, Ky.), Haden Fox (Somerset, Ky.), Croslin, Maguire and Battles each collected one hit in the loss.
The Eagles will return to action this weekend when they will play their first-ever home games in a four game set with St. Francis (Ill.) featuring two games on Saturday and two more on Sunday.
Midway will be playing their home games at Chandler Field, which is located in Versailles, Kentucky. The address is 275 Beasley Street, Versailles, KY 40383.
