Men's Basketball - Fri, Feb. 17, 2017

Midway, Ky. – The first-ever Midway University men's basketball team played their final game in the friendly confines of Marshall Gymnasium when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) for Senior Night on Thursday night.

Prior to the game, the Eagles honored their lone senior, Tyler Smothers. A native of Lexington, Ky., Smothers appeared in eight games this season averaging 7.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.

The Eagles (2-24, 2-16 RSC) held a 10 point lead early in the game, but the Bearcats came battling back at the end of the first half and throughout the second as they came away with the 87-61 win.

Midway got off to a hot start as they hit 5-of-7 from the field to start the game leading to a 12-2 advantage four minutes in. Brandon Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) played a key role in the run hitting back-to-back triples to stretch the lead to 10.

After getting off to a slow start, the Bearcats (12-15, 9-8 RSC) began to heat up midway through the opening frame. Trailing 17-7 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half, Brescia went on a 16-7 run cutting the deficit to one before taking their first lead of the game at 29-27.

The Bearcats stretched their lead to as many as five in the final moments of the first half as they would take a 38-34 lead into the locker room.

Brescia would continue to add to their lead throughout the second half as they opened the final 20 minutes on a 13-1 run to build their lead out to 16 less than four minutes into the second half.

The Eagles would trail by as many as 17 with less than 10 minutes to play, but they battled back. A triple by Will Hudson (Calhoun, Ky.) cut the deficit to nine, but the Bearcats proved to be too much as they answered with 12 unanswered en route to the 87-61 victory.

The visitors held the advantage shooting 44.6 percent from the floor (33-74) and 22.2 percent from long distance (4-18). The Eagles on the other hand shot 41.4 percent overall (24-58), while going 7-of-19 from three for 36.8 percent.

Johnson led the way finishing with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Freshman, Brandon Maxwell (Leesville, La.) added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Jake Logsdon (Rumsey, Ky.) also grabbed eight rebounds.

The Eagles will take the floor for the final time in their inaugural season on Saturday, February 18, when they travel to Berea (Ky.) for a 3 p.m. ET tipoff.
