Morehead, Ky. – The Midway University western equestrian team had another strong showing on Saturday, February 25, when nine of their 14 riders took part in the IHSA Zone 6, Region 3 Regional Championship in Morehead, Kentucky.
It was the final chance that the riders would have the opportunity to qualify for the semifinals which take place in Laurinburg, N.C. next month. In order for the riders to qualify for the semifinals, they would have to finish in the top two of their event.
Beverly Gartland, Madison Chambers, Hemi Fordham and Taylor Stephenson were the first to show in a large group of Intermediate riders split into two groups. Once both groups had shown, the call backs were announced with both Gartland and Chambers making the cut. New horses were drawn and the class was run again. To help her make the final decision the judge asked four riders, including Garland, to switch horses and do the pattern for the third time. She continued strong and was named Intermediate Regional Champion.
Next up were the four Beginner Walk/Jog riders. Sahvanna Chaffins, Precious Holloway, Charleen Holly and Rashea Smith. They too had to work a pattern and once again the judge asked four riders to switch horses including Rashea. She nailed it again giving her the Reserve Regional Champion Beginner title.
Michelle Clark also represented Midway in the Novice group with a good showing finishing in sixth place.
Both Beverly Gartland and Rashea Smith will attend the Semi Finals on March 25-26 where the top four riders in each division will move on to the IHSA National Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park on May 4-7.
