Chillicothe, Ohio – The Midway University baseball team opened postseason play with a bang on Saturday with a run rule victory over Rio Grande (Ohio) in the opening round of the River States Conference Baseball Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
The Eagles (25-27) scored six runs in the second, three in the third and four in the sixth en route to the 13-3 victory in seven innings. The RedStorm (33-18-1) scored two in the third and one in the fifth, but they couldn't match Midway's 13 runs on 13 hits.
Midway got on the board in a big way with six runs on four hits in the second frame. Josh Wenning (Palmyra, Ind.) and Matthew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) each delivered an RBI single in the inning, while Hector Quinones (Barceloneta, PR) and Barrett Croslin (Russellville, Ky.) both game through with a pair of two-run singles to push Midway's lead to 6-0.
After a quick 1-2-3 second inning, the Midway offense went back to work in the top of the third scoring three more runs. Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly, while Reid Battles (Denton, Texas) ripped an RBI single and later scored on an error pushing the lead to 9-0.
Rio Grande answered with two in the third and one in the fifth, but Midway responded with four runs in the sixth inning. Quinones ripped a one-out double and later scored on an RBI single by Danny Maguire (Dana Point, Calif.).
After a pitching change, DJ Lewis (San Diego, Calif.) roped a triple down the right field line that scored Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) – who singled earlier in the inning – and Maguire. Then Lewis scored an RBI single by Jones to push Midway lead to 13-3.
The run support was more than enough for junior right-hander, James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.). Davenport (5-1) tossed seven innings allowing three runs – two earned – on three hits, while striking out three batters.
With the victory on Saturday, Luther Bramblett's squad with advance in the winners bracket where they will meet Indiana University Southeast on Sunday at VA Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. ET.
