Nicholasville, Ky. -- After a successful showing in the River States Conference Individual Tournament this past weekend, the Midway University women's tennis team was back at it on Tuesday afternoon when they hosted Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) at the Bluegrass Racquet Club.
It was a successful return to the courts for the Eagles as they swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches en route to picking up the 9-0 victory.
The duo of Erin Byassee (Paducah, Ky.) and Jilian Verbrugghe (Macomb, Mich.) got the Eagles off on the right foot with a win at No. 2 doubles. Byassee and Verbrugghe blanked Kelsey Knodell and Cheyenne Burress, 8-0.
In the final doubles match at No. 3, the freshman duo of Amber Pierce (Liberty, Ky.) and Josie Hutchinson (Raceland, Ky.) took down Jessica Berger and Sydney Stamper, 8-3, to give Midway a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Stretching the lead to 4-0 in favor of Midway was Amber Pierce at No. 2 singles. Pierce made quick work of Hannah Broermann and won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Clinching the match for the Eagles was Erin Byassee at No. 1 singles. Byassee won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, over Blake Nelson to give Midway the 5-0 lead, clinching the match.
Even with the match in hand, the Eagles kept the pedal to the metal. At No. 4 singles, Josie Hutchinson defeated Kelsey Knodell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Making their debut appearances in the lineup was a pair of freshman, Laura Lammert (Racine, Wis.) and Rachel Payne (Henderson, Ky.). It was a successful first appearance for both Lammert and Payne as they each defeated their opponent in straight sets.
In the final singles match, Jilian Verbrugghe took on Jessica Berger in a back-and-forth battle. The two traded shots throughout the match, but it was Verbrugghe who walked away with the win in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
The Eagles will have a couple of weeks off from competition as they will return to action on Saturday, September 30, when they take on Johnson (Tenn.) at 1 p.m. ET at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Center.
