London, Ky. -- The Midway University men's golf team closed out their first event of the season on Tuesday afternoon when they played the second round of the Bill Sergent Invitational hosted by Cumberlands (Ky.) in London, Ky. at the Crooked Creek Golf Club.
After shooting a 311 in the first round on Monday, the Eagles finished with a 320 in the second round to card a two-round total of 631. The Eagles finished the event in sixth place.
Cumberland (Tenn.) took a 12 stroke lead into the second round on Tuesday and they held on to win by one stroke with a two-day total of 614 (299-315).
Leading the way for Midway was freshman, Cody French. The Cox's Creek, Ky. native was named to the All-Tournament team after finishing in third place overall. After shooting at even par in the first round, French carded a 75 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 147.
French finished two strokes behind the winner, Erik Hermanson - of Union College - who finished with a two-round total of 145 (71-74).
Up next for the Eagles was fellow freshman, Parker Monhollen (Lancaster, Ky.). Monhollen finished the tournament in a tie for 15th place after a total score of 156. He shot a 75 in the opening round and followed that up with an 81 on Tuesday.
Showing one of the best improvements of anyone in the tournament was junior, Austin Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.). Mitchell struggled with a 90 in the first round, but he came out on Tuesday and fired a 79 for a two-round total of 169.
Closing out the tournament on a high note was freshman, Issac Dick (Monticello, Ky.). Dick competed in the event as an individual and showed improvement over the two days. He shot an 83 on Monday and then he followed that up with a 79 on Tuesday for a total score of 162.
The final two Eagles in action was junior, Josh Koester, and freshman, Corbin Kirksey (Monticello, Ky.). Koester carded a two-round total of 167 (80-87), while Kirksey had a total score of 169 (84-85).
The highlight for Koester's day came on the back nine. On the 12th hole - a 520 yard par 5 - Koester chipped in for an eagle three.
The Eagles are back in action on September 18-19 when they play in the Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational at Cherry Blossom Golf and Country Club in Georgetown, Kentucky.
