Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The Midway University volleyball team was back in action on Saturday afternoon when they closed out their trip to the "Steel City" with a matchup against River States Conference foe, Carlow (Pa.).
After falling in the first set, 25-14, the Eagles (4-16, 0-5 RSC) battled back to win the second set, 25-23, to tie the match at one set apiece. But the Celtics (9-11, 2-4 RSC) came storming back to win the last two sets, 25-22 and 25-13, to win the match 3-1.
It was a slow night for both offenses as Carlow led the way with a .147 hitting clip for the match, while Midway collected a .007 hitting percentage. The home team had 40 kills in 129 swings and Midway had 26 kills in 143 attempts.
Leading the way offensively for the Eagles was the trio of Breanna Baldwin (Yorktown, Ind.), Ashley Yates (Springfield, Ky.) and Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.). The three finished with six kills apiece, while Sherrard tallied a team-high .400 hitting percentage.
Sherrard also ran Midway's offense and finished with 18 assists for the Eagles. She pitched in defensively as well with 12 digs. She was one of five Eagles to tally double-digit digs.
The other four Eagles to tally double-digit digs were Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.), Jennifer Harden (Houston, Texas), Ashley Yates and Claire Thomas (Louisville, Ky.). Payne notched a match-high 25 digs and Harden had 17, while Yates and Thomas had 15 and 12, respectively.
After playing their last two on the road, the Eagles will begin a four game home stand on Thursday, October 5, when they host Boyce (Ky.) at 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
