Midway, Ky. -- The Midway University women's soccer team was back in action on Saturday afternoon when they continued River States Conference play by hosted Rio Grande (Ohio) at the Midway Soccer Field.
The RedStorm (4-5, 2-0 RSC) scored a goal in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room. After intermission, the visitors tacked on two more goals to walk away with the 3-0 win over the Eagles (4-2, 0-2 RSC).
Rio Grande dominated play throughout as they more they doubled the Eagles up in shots with a 13-5 shot advantage, including 9-1 in goals on goal. It was a physical matchup as there were a total of 10 fouls called, while there were eight cards handed out throughout the match.
Just over 10 minutes into the game, the RedStorm had a good chance to score when they were granted a penalty kick after a foul occurred in the box. Chase Davis lined up the PK for the visitors, but senior, Emily Belt (Paducah, Ky.) was right there for the save.
Just a few minutes later, the RedStorm netted the game's first goal to take a 1-0 lead. It looked like the Eagles were going to tie it up 28th minute when Midway had their chance at a penalty kick.
After a foul occurred in the box, Midway was given a PK that sophomore, Larissa Cussins (Cheyenne, Wyo.) lined up. Cussins hit it on line, but right at the goalkeeper as she was right there for the save.
The Eagles had another good chance to score a few minutes later in the 36th minute when Ciara Weir (Cox's Creek, Ky.) took a free kick from about 20 yards out. Weir hit it right on the button, but it clanged off the crossbar and out of play as Rio Grande took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Midway had a couple of chances to score in the second half, but their best opportunity came in the opening minute of the second stanza. Senior, Kindsay Miller-Riney (Bardstown, Ky.) had a shot from about 10 yards out, but her shot deflected off the post.
The RedStorm added two goals in the 52nd and 82nd minutes to walk away with the 3-0 win.
Midway goalkeeper, Emily Belt, played a total of 83 minutes and 16 seconds in goal for the Eagles. She allowed three goals, but finished with six saves. Rebekah McKee (Rossville, Ind.) played the final six minutes in change and didn't make a save.
Midway is back in action on Friday, October 6, when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a matchup with RSC foe, Point Park (Pa.).
