Prestonsburg, Ky. -- The Midway University men's golf team returned to the course on Saturday when they played the opening round of the UPIKE Fall Invitational hosted by Pikeville (Ky.) at StoneCrest Golf Course.
The Eagles are currently in third place after the opening round of the event. Midway shot a 320 as they lead Kentucky Christian, who sits in fourth as they shot a 343 in the first round. The Blue and Yellow trail Bluefield (Va.), who is in second overall after a 318 on Saturday.
Leading the way for the Eagles was freshman, Cody French. The Cox's Creek, Ky. native was firing on all cylinders as he fired a 73 in the opening round to sit in second place. He trails Roger Maynard of Pikeville by two strokes entering Tuesday's second round.
Sitting in a tie for sixth place is junior, Austin Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.). Mitchell shot a 40 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine for a 7-over, 79.
The final three players in action was the freshman trio of Corbin Kirksey (Monticello, Ky.), Parker Monhollen (Lancaster, Ky.) and Issac Dick (Monticello, Ky.). Kirksey carded an 83, while Monhollen and Dick had scores of 91 and 96, respectively.
The second and final round of the UPIKE Fall Invitational gets underway on Sunday morning at StoneCrest Golf Course.
