Prestonsburg, Ky. -- The Midway University men's golf team improved by 10 strokes in Sunday's second round of the UPIKE Fall Invitational at StoneCrest Golf Course to finish in a tie for second place in the event.
In the opening round on Saturday, the Eagles shot a 320 and sat in third place overall, but on Sunday they shot a 310 to finish with a total score of 630 for a tie for second place finish. They tied Bluefield (Va.) who also finished with a 630 overall (318-312).
"The guys had a nice improvement today," head golf coach, Otis Smith, said. "They improved by 10 shots and tied for second; I really think we are beginning to learn from our mistakes and improve on them, I think we will shock some teams in the conference preview next week."
Leading the way for the Eagles and earning a spot on the All-Tournament team was freshman, Cody French. The Cox's Creek, Ky. native shot an 80 on Sunday after shooting a 73 on Saturday. His total score of 153 earned him a fourth place finish in the event.
Up next and finishing in a tie for seventh place was Austin Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.). The junior shot a 79 in the first round and improved by two strokes in Sunday's round where he fired a 77 to finish with a total score of 156.
Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles was Josh Koester (Louisville, Ky.) and Logan Medley (Lebanon, Ky.). Koester posted a 10th place finish overall with a 160. The junior shot an 80 in both the first and second rounds.
Medley, on the other hand, showed the best improvement of anyone in the tournament. The senior struggled with an 88 on Saturday, but in the second round he carded a 1-over, 73 to finish with a two-round score of 161.
The final three players in action for the Eagles was Corbin Kirksey (Monticello, Ky.), Issac Dick (Monticello, Ky.) and Parker Monhollen (Lancaster, Ky.). Kirksey posted a two-round score of 165 (83-82), while Dick and Monhollen carded a 185 (96-89) and 186 (91-95), respectively.
Midway will return to action on October 9-10 when they travel to Union, Ky. to compete in the River States Conference Fall Preview at Lassing Pointe Golf Course.
