Prestonsburg, Ky. -- The Midway University women's golf team held on for their first victory of the 2017 season on Sunday when they won the UPIKE Fall Invitational at StoneCrest Golf Course.
The Eagles shot a 327 in the first round, but in the second round they shot a program best 308 en route to winning the event with a total team score of 635. They defeated Pikeville (Ky.), who finished in second place with a 644 (328-316), by nine strokes.
"This is the golf I've been waiting all year for these ladies to play," noted Otis Smith, head golf coach. "They finally put it all together and showed just how good we can be when we play with no mental mistakes and play as a team for each other."
Leading the way for the Eagles was senior, Kathryn Lawler. The Georgetown, Ky. native had a tough first round with an 80, but she turned it around in the second where she posted the lowest single round in program history with an even par, 72. Here total score of 152 earned her a third place finish overall finishing just one shot off the winning score.
Finishing one spot behind Lawler in the final standings was Chelsea Schack. The senior from Alexandria, Ky. shot a career-low 76 on Saturday and followed it up with an 80 in the second round to finish with a 156 overall. She finished the event in fourth place.
Both Lawler and Schack were named to the UPIKE Fall Invitational All-Tournament team for their top-5 finishes.
Shooting the best round of her career on Sunday was junior, Rylee Beard. The Campbellsville, Ky. native carded an 83 on Saturday, but she posted the lowest round of her career in the second round where she fired a 4-over, 76 to finish with a 159 overall in a tie for sixth place overall.
Showing one of the best improvements of anyone in the tournament was Hannah Scroggins (Williamstown, Ky.). Like Lawler, the sophomore struggled with a 90 in the first round, but saw a 10 stroke improvement in the second round with an 80 to finish in a tie for 11th place with a 170.
The final two Eagles in action was freshman, Jenna Lewis (Shelbyville, Ky.) and senior, Taylor Ritchie (Winchester, Ky.). Lewis finished the tournament with a 178 (88-90), while Ritchie posted a 184 (95-89).
Midway will look to build on the momentum from the UPIKE Fall Invitational as they travel to Union, Ky. on October 9-10 when they compete in the River States Conference Fall Preview at Lassing Pointe Golf Course.
