Midway, Ky. -- The Midway University volleyball team put an end to their six game skid on Thursday, October 5, when they swept Boyce (Ky.) in straight sets inside Marshall Gymnasium in a non-conference bout.
The Eagles (5-16) tallied a season-high .289 hitting percentage en route to the 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-13) sweep of the visiting Bulldogs (0-14).
For the match, Midway collected 37 kills with just 13 miscues in 83 swings. Midway's defense, on the other hand, held Boyce to a .070 hitting clip. The Bulldogs posted 20 kills in 71 attempts with 15 attacking errors. Midway also served up 14 aces compared to just three for the visitors.
In the opening set, Jordan Gregory of Boyce tallied a kill to pull her team within one, 5-4, but the Eagles scored seven of the next eight points to build a 12-5 lead behind aces from Rebecca Cloutier (Peewee Valley, Ky.) and Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.).
Boyce battled back to within four, 14-10, after a 3-0 run, but Midway closed the set out with an 11-2 run to with the set, 25-12. In the run Midway got three kills from Jennifer Harden (Houston, Texas), while Ashley Yates (Springfield, Ky.) served up two of her five aces in the run.
The second set was nip-and-tuck throughout as Midway had to battle from behind early in the set. Trailing 5-3, the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to build a 7-5 edge they wouldn't relinquish. The Bulldogs had the lead to three, 23-20, but a kill by Raquel Bowers (Long Beach, Calif.) gave Midway the 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
With the 2-0 lead at their back, the Eagles put together one of their best offensive sets of the season in the third stanza. Midway dominated the set from the get go tallying a .520 hitting clip en route to the 25-13 win clinching the match 3-0.
Leading the offensive attach for the Eagles was Jennifer Harden. The senior posted 15 kills and a season-high .353 hitting percentage in the win. Bowers added eight kills, while Tayler Johnson (Elk Grove, Calif.) had a .667 hitting clip.
Defensively the Eagles were led by junior libero, Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.). Payne helped the defense transition to offense with her match-high 16 digs. Harden and Yates added six digs apiece, while Claire Thomas (Louisville, Ky.) pitched in with five.
Midway will jump back into River States Conference play on Tuesday, October 10, when they host Indiana University Southeast at 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
