Midway, Ky. -- The Midway University women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule on a high note as they swept a doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan College and Shawnee State (Ohio) on Saturday, October 7, at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Center.
In their first match of the day, the Eagles were able to squeak out a 5-4 win over Kentucky Wesleyan and then just a few hours later, they dominated Shawnee State to complete a perfect 2-0 record on the day.
Against Kentucky Wesleyan, the Eagles took two of the three doubles matches and then followed that up by winning three of the singles matches to walk away with the 5-4 win.
Then against Shawnee State, Midway swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. The home team then won a pair of singles matches to clinch the match 5-0.
Match 1 - Midway 5, Kentucky Wesleyan 4
With the match tied at 4-4, the Eagles would need to win at No. 5 singles in order to clinch the match. Jilian Verbrugghe won the first set 6-4, but lost a hard fought second set 6-3, to Amy Gossett as the match would be decided on a super tiebreaker.
Verbrugghe fell behind early in the tiebreak, 4-2, but she battled back and won the next two points to tie at 4-4. The freshman from Macomb, Mich. then won a string of four consecutive points en route to 10-6 tiebreak victory to clinch the 5-4 win for the Eagles.
Midway grabbed the early 2-1 lead after the three doubles match. After the Panthers won at No. 1 doubles, Midway won a No. 3 and No. 2, respectively, to take the early 2-1 lead.
At No. 3 doubles, the freshman duo of Josie Hutchinson (Raceland, Ky.) and Amber Pierce (Liberty, Ky.) won a close match over Amy Gossett and Eva Sampson. Hutchinson and Pierce broke Gossett and Sampson's serve late in the match for the 8-6 win.
Midway then won a No. 4 and No. 6 singles to set up the exciting finish. Amber Pierce won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, over Precious Lee at No. 4 singles, while Rachel Payne (Henderson, Ky.) also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, over Eva Sampson.
Match 2 - Midway 5, Shawnee State 0
Against Shawnee State, Midway would dominate from the first serve. In the three doubles matches, Midway dropped just two games en route to sweeping the three matches.
Midway dropped just one game at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but both won easily 8-1. Gabby Meis and Madison Chambers won 8-1 at No. 1, while Erin Byassee (Paducah, Ky.) and Jilian Verbrugghe won by the same score at No. 2.
Midway would need to win just two singles matches in order to clinch the match. The first victory came at No. 5 where Pierce made quick work of Hart. The freshman blanked her foe in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Then at No. 1 singles, Meis clinched the match for the home team. The senior blanked Jessica Willard in the first set 6-0 and then lost just won game in the second set 6-1, clinching the match for the Eagles.
In the remaining four singles matches that weren't completed, Midway held a lead in three of the four.
