Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The Midway University men's soccer team scored a season high five goals, while picking up their first River States Conference win of the season on Sunday, October 8, at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa. against Carlow (Pa.).
The Eagles took control of the game from the start by scoring in the opening minute of play. The visitors added two more goals in the first half to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room en route to picking up the 5-2 victory.
Midway (4-4-1, 1-2-1 RSC) dominated possession throughout as they held an 18-4 advantage in shots and an 11-3 lead in shots on frame over the Celtics (0-10-1, 0-4 RSC).
Midway's first two goals of the game came within 10 minutes of one another as junior, Callum Kemp (Lincoln, England) scored his third and fourth goals of the season. His first goal came in the first minute and then his second came in the 11th minute to give Midway a 2-0 advantage.
After Carlow cut the lead in half in the 34th minute, Midway dropped in another goal right before the halftime buzzer in the 42nd minute. Harry Kirwan (Lincoln, England) headed a ball to Pol Marco (Barcelona, P.R.) who finished off his second goal of the season to push Midway's lead to 3-1 at intermission.
Carlow cut the lead to one in the 53rd minute, but Midway added to their lead with goals in the 63rd and 80th minutes to make the final score 5-2.
It was Kemp who netted his first career hat trick when he scored his third goal of the game in the 63rd minute. Brad Wilson (Doncaster, England) found Max Bristow (Exeter, England), who connected with Kemp as he doubled the Celtics up at 4-2.
Then in the 80th minute, Wilson played a picture perfect corner kick to Bristow, who headed it to junior defender Reece Saunders (Exeter, England) who finished it off for the game's final goal – his first goal of the season – making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Eagles.
Playing the first 73 minutes in goal for the Eagles was senior, Christian Neira. The Santiago, Chile surrendered two goals, but finished with one save in the win. Andres Ordonez (Guatemala City, Guatemala) played the final 17 minutes in goal for the Eagles and didn't face a shot.
Midway will return to action on Thursday, October 12, when they host Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) at 4 p.m. ET at the Midway Soccer Field.
