Union, Ky. -- The Midway University men's golf team began perhaps the most important tournament of the fall season on Monday, October 9, when they played the opening round of the River States Conference Fall Preview at Lassing Pointe Golf Club in Union, Kentucky.
After the opening 18 holes of the event, the Eagles sit in a tie for third place after shooting a season-best 301. Midway trails second place Asbury (Ky.) by 10 strokes after they shot a 7-over, 291. The Eagles are tied with Point Park (Pa.), who also shot a 301 on Monday.
Leading the 11 team field after the opening 18 holes is Indiana University East. The Red Wolves shot a 3-over, 287, as they take a four stroke lead into Tuesday.
All players in the tournament played the first round on Monday as well as the first nine holes of the second round. On Tuesday, golfers will complete the second round to begin the day and then they will play the third and final round of the 54-hole event.
Leading the way for the Eagles sitting in a tie for seventh place was Austin Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.). The junior fired a 1-over, 72, in the first round as he enters Tuesday three strokes off the lead. Mitchell carded three birdies and 12 pars and played the par 5's at 2-under par on Monday.
Gage Basiletti of Point Park and Tyler Pearson of Indiana University were two of four players to shoot in the red in Monday's opening round. Basiletti and Pearson both shot a 2-under, 69.
Finishing just one shot behind Mitchell was freshman, Cody French. The Cox's Creek, Ky. native is currently in a tie for ninth place after carding a 2-over, 73, over the opening 18 holes. French found success on the par 3's where he played at 1-under, which ranks second best overall.
Up next for the Eagles was the lone senior on the team, Logan Medley (Lebanon, Ky.). After Monday, the senior is in a tie for 21st after he fired a 6-over, 77.
The final two players in action for the Eagles was junior, Josh Koester (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman, Parker Monhollen (Lancaster, Ky.). Koester posted 12 pars in the opening round for an 8-over, 79, while Monhollen finished one shot behind his teammate with a 9-over, 80.
The Eagles will play the final nine holes of the second round and the third and final round of the event beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
