Midway, Ky. -- The Midway University volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday, October 10, when they hosted Indiana University Southeast in a River States Conference matchup inside Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles (5-17, 0-6 RSC) hung tough with the visitors, but were unable to slow down the Grenadiers' offensive attack as they fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 28-26).
IU Southeast (11-11, 8-1 RSC) tallied a .273 hitting clip for the match with 43 kills in 99 swings with 16 miscues. Midway got better as the match went on as they hit .173 for the match with 30 kills. The game featured 19 service aces as well as 16 service errors.
After a tough first set where Midway hit -.032 and the Grenadiers hit .300, the Eagles' offense got exponentially better in the final two sets.
In the second set, where Midway hit .286, the Grenadiers held a 24-19 lead late, but the Eagles battled back. Midway got a kill from Raquel Bowers (Long Beach, Calif.) and an ace from Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.) to pull within 24-23, but IU Southeast got a kill to win the set 25-23.
Then in the fourth set, Midway held a 23-21 lead late in the set, but the Grenadiers battled back to tie it at 24-24. After trading the next two points, Jennifer Harden (Houston, Texas) stepped up with a kill to give Midway a 26-25 lead, but IU Southeast won the next three points to win the set 28-26 and the match 3-0.
The senior trio of Harden, Bowers and Tayler Johnson (Elk Grove, Calif.) led the way offensively. Harden had nine kills and Bowers tallied seven with a .292 hitting clip, while Johnson collected eight kills and a .538 hitting percentage.
Running the setting duties for the Eagles was junior, Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.). She tallied 25 of her team's 27 assists for the match.
Defensively, libero, Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.) led the way. The junior tallied a game-high 16 digs for the Eagles. Harden also pitched in on defense with eight digs.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, October 14, when they host Brescia (Ky.) at 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
