Union, Ky. – The Midway University women's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule on Tuesday, October 10, when they played the final 27 holes of the River States Conference Women's Golf Fall Preview at Lassing Pointe Golf Course in Union, Kentucky.
The Eagles took home a second place finish in the event with a total score of 997. Midway showed improvement as the tournament went on. After a 336 in the first round, Midway shot a 331 and 330 over the final two rounds for a second place finish.
Midway finished two strokes behind the winner of the event, Asbury (Ky.). Asbury finished with a 995 (339-323-333) for the tournament.
Overall, the Eagles had three individuals take home top-5 finishes in the event, with another right outside the top-5 in eighth place. Kathryn Lawler, Hannah Scroggins, Chelsea Schack and Rylee Beard all took home top-10 finishes in the tournament.
Lawler led the way in the event finishing in second place overall with a 231. The senior from Georgetown, Ky. shot an 81 in the second round sandwiched in between a pair of 75's in the first and third rounds. She finished two shots behind the winner. Lawler led the field in pars with 32, while also carding three birdies. Lawler played in the tournament as an individual.
Scroggins was up next for the Eagles taking home a third place finish. The sophomore was one of only three players to finish all three rounds in the 70's. She finished with a 233 overall (79-78-76). The Williamstown, Ky. native tied for the most birdies with 5, while carding the third most pars with 29.
Finishing in fifth place overall was Chelsea Schack. The senior from Alexandria, Ky. was consistent over the three rounds with a 79 first and a pair of 80's in the second and third rounds. Like Lawler, she tallied three birdies to go with 28 pars in the tournament.
The final player finishing in the top-10 was Rylee Beard. Beard carded a pair 86's in the first and third rounds to go with an 83 in the second round for a 54-hole total of 255. The junior from Campbellsville, Ky. carded 23 birdies for the tournament.
Also finishing in the top-20 overall was the duo of freshman, Jenna Lewis (Shelbyville, Ky.) and sophomore, Kayla Meredith (Brownstown, Ky.). Lewis finished in a tie for 19th with a 270 overall (92-90-88), while Meredith came in at 21st overall with a 278 (93-96-89).
The tournament served as a preview for the RSC Tournament Championship to be held at the same course in the spring season. The spring event will be held April 16-17, 2018 at Lassing Pointe GC (Union, Ky.) with the team champion qualifying for the NAIA Women's Golf National Championship May 22-25, 2018 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
