Union, Ky. -- The Midway University men's golf team wrapped up play in the River States Conference Men's Golf Fall Preview on Tuesday, October 10, at Lassing Pointe Golf Club in Union, Kentucky.
The Eagles shot 305 or better in all three of the rounds en route to a sixth place finish in the tournament. Their best round came in the opening round where they shot a 301. They followed that up with a 303 in the second round a 305 in the final round for a total score of 909.
Indiana University East went wire-to-wire to win the event with a total score of 886 (287-293-306). Just eight shots separated the teams from sixth place to third place.
Leading the way for the Eagles was freshman, Cody French. The Cox's Creek, Ky. native became the first-ever player to shoot under par. After a 73 and a 76 in the first two rounds, French shot a 2-under, 69 on his way to a third place finish overall with a total score of 218. He was the only player to play the par 3's at even par in the event, while also carding 36 pars.
Finishing just outside the top-10 was junior, Austin Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.). Mitchell played all three rounds in the 70's to finish in a tie for 14th. He shot a 72 and a 76 in the first two rounds and followed that up with a 78 for a 54-hole total of 226. Out of the five players that played in the tournament for Midway, he carded the most birdies with seven.
Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles was the duo of Logan Medley (Lebanon, Ky.) and Josh Koester (Louisville, Ky.). Both Medley and Koester played consistent throughout the three rounds with all their rounds finishing in the 70's.
Medley tallied a 77 in the opening round to go with a 75 in the second round and a 79 in the third round for a total score of 231. Koester, on the other hand, posted his best score in the second round with a 76, while carding a pair of 79's in the first and third rounds for a 234 overall.
The final player in action for the Eagles was Parker Monhollen (Lancaster, Ky.). The freshman finished with a pair of 80's in the first two rounds and then fired an 83 in the final round for a total score of 243.
The tournament served as a preview for the RSC Tournament championship at the same course in the spring. The spring event will be held April 23-24, 2018 at Lassing Pointe GC (Union, Ky.) with the top two teams qualifying for the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship May 15-18, 2018 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
